E-Scooters, Skateboards, and Bikes Safety

Watch this short video about electric scooters, skateboards, and bike safety on USC’s campuses.

Bicycle & Scooter Safety

Every day, bikes and scooters are sharing paths with pedestrians, skateboards and other mobility devices on campus. Here are some tips to stay safe and avoid an accident:

Walk your bike or scooter at intersections

  • Dismount and walk your bike or scooter at all intersections on and around University Park Campus.
  • This includes on-campus intersections, such as Trousdale and 34th Street and Hahn Plaza.
  • Failure to comply may result in a traffic ticket.

Always ride with the flow of traffic

  • Bicycles and scooters are considered vehicles and must follow all motor vehicle traffic laws.
  • Ride as far to the right side of the road as is practical and safe, and use bike lanes when available. Never ride on sidewalks.
  • Avoid drivers’ blind spots, and don’t weave between lanes.

Wear a helmet

  • You are highly encouraged to wear a helmet while riding a bike or scooter.
  • Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death and disabling injuries from cycling crashes.

Take off the headphones and earbuds

  • Your ability to hear traffic, horns and trains is essential to your survival.
  • It’s also California law.

This should be obvious, but…

  • Only one rider per scooter or bike.
  • Riding under the influence is a crime.
  • Don’t block access ways with your bike or scooter. Always park with bike racks.
  • Rentable scooters (LINK, BIRD, etc.) should be parked in an upright position, as close to the curb as possible as not to block accessways.

More Bike Tips

Be seen and heard

  • Use hand signals to indicate turns and stops.
  • Use your voice to alert pedestrians or other bicyclists that you are approaching or passing.
  • Install reflectors or lights and wear reflective or bright colors in evenings or early mornings.

Use the right bike

  • Adjust your seat height to give you 1-2 inches of clearance when standing over your bike.
  • Make sure your handlebars, wheels and brakes are functioning properly.
  • Utilize campus bike repair and pump stations.

Keep your bike

  • Register your bike with DPS.
  • Use a U-Lock to secure your bike to a rack or stationary object.
  • Never park in a doorway, stairs or block access ways; your bike will be impounded.
